York is the county seat of the county of York, Pennsylvania. Also known as the White Rose City, it is the 11th largest city in the state. York was established by settlers from the Philadelphia region in 1741. On September 24, 1787, it was incorporated as a borough. York became a city on January 11, 1887.
During the American Revolutionary War, York was the temporary capital of the Continental Congress between September 30, 1777, and June 27, 1778. It was also the site of the drafting and adoption of the Articles of Confederation. The city claims to be the first Capital of the United States and many of its businesses and organizations have used the moniker in their names.
In the 1800s, York was ranked in the top 100 most populous urban areas in the U.S. During the Postbellum era, it was a regional center for agriculture and an important industrial center with industries like railroad manufacturing, steam engines, and papermaking moving to the area. In 1895, the first pottery factory in the area, Pfaltzgraff company, was established. From 1905 to 1917, the York Motor Car Co. developed Pullman automobiles on North George Street. The City of York was where the York Peppermint Pattie was originally created in 1940.
In 2007, the Santander Stadium was constructed as the home of the professional baseball team York Revolution after many years of trying to secure funding by the city. As of 2010, York has a population of 43,718 people.

Held annually in late July, York State Fair is a historic event in the city of York. Said to be the oldest fair in the country with its history tracing back to 1765, the fair lasts for 10 years, consisting of one whole week and two weekends. Hosted at the York Expo Center in Carlisle Avenue, it offers visitors recreational attractions like fair rides, games and contests. The fair also hosts musical acts from notable musical artists such as Carrie Underwood, Toby Keith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gretchen Wilson and Alabama.
