Description of Alanton

Alanton is a residential neighborhood in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Located in the northern part of the city, the upscale community was developed by the father of prominent Virginia architect Alan McCullough. However, the area would go on to be named after the architect as he and his family lived on a piece of land purchased in the neighborhood in the 1920s. Today, Alanton is bounded by Broad Bay to the north, the Narrows to the northeast, and Linkhorn Bay to the east and southeast. It is within proximity to the communities of Great Neck, Wolfsnare Plantation, and Linkhorn Estates.

Education

For those living in the neighborhood of Alanton, residents with children are part of the Virginia Beach City Public Schools District. Students are zoned for the following schools:

• Alanton Elementary School
• Lynnhaven Middle School
• First Colonial High School

Alanton Elementary School is the only one of the schools that is situated in the neighborhood. With an overall Niche grade of an A-minus, the highly rated school has a population of 648 students from grades pre-Kindergarten through 5th. There is a student-to-teacher ratio of 16 to 1. Based on state standardized test scores, 89% of its students are at least proficient in reading, and 91% are in math. GreatSchools gives it a rating of a 7 out of 10. The elementary school can be found on Stephens Road.

Cape Henry Collegiate (CHC)

Just southwest of Alanton is Cape Henry Collegiate. Sitting on a 30-acre campus, it is the oldest accredited private, co-education, college-preparatory, independent day school in Virginia Beach. Established in 1924, the school offers classes for students from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. Enrolling around 900 students, its tuition range from $12,450 to $20,770. Notable alumni and faculty of Cape Henry Collegiate are former Major League Baseball player Tim Hummel who is now the current coach at CHC, former US Field Hockey Kate Kinnear, who's also a current coach of the school, NBA player Devon Hall, Recording Academy member Alex Ghenea, professional musician Will Overman, professional baseball player Sean Poppen, CFO of LPL Financial holdings Matt Audette, and CEO of L2 Services Logan Tucker.

Great Neck Village

Serving the residents in the neighborhood of Alanton and its surrounding areas, Great Neck Village is a shopping strip on Great Neck Road. It provides a number of specialty stores and dining options for one to choose from. Some of which are sweetFrong Premium Frozen Yogurt, Jimmy John's Shubham, The Bagel Baker, Food Lion, Coastal Authority, Rite Aid Pharmacy, Peking City Chinese, and  Virginia ABC.
