About South Norfolk

South Norfolk is part of the City of Chesapeake, Virginia. Also known as SoNo, it was once an independent city in the South Hamptons Roads region of the state. In 1919, the area was incorporated into the Town of South Norfolk. Three years later, it was given the status of an independent city. The independent city of South Norfolk and Norfolk County was merged in 1963 to form the independent city of Chesapeake, with the approval of the Virginia General Assembly.

Today, South Norfolk is located at the coordinates of 36.7937 degrees north latitude and 76.2712 degrees west longitude, along the Southern Branch Elizabeth River. The close-knitted neighborhood is home to a local historic district and a national historic district. In 1989, the South Norfolk area was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

South Norfolk Community Center

Providing recreational opportunities to the residents in the area, the South Norfolk Community Center can be found on Godwin Avenue. It offers amenities such as:

  • Locker and Shower Room

Outside of the center is a playground and picnic tables for visitors to eat, relax and enjoy the fresh air. Like all of the community centers managed by the City of Chesapeake Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, the South Norfolk Community Center is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Fridays, it is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The center is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Elizabeth River Park

Located at 1400 Elizabeth River Way on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, the Elizabeth River Park is a great place for boaters or visitors who want to take in the scenic view of the area and the South Norfolk Jordan Park. It provides a playground, free public boat ramp, boat trailer parking, free crabbing and fishing pier, fish cleaning station, fish weighing station, snack shack building, cardio fitness area, rental shelters and gazebos, dog park, park benches, paved walking paths, and many more. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
