Harrisburg, PA Diocese Releases List Of 71 Priests Accused Of Child Sexual Abuse

The Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania has released a full report on 71 priests, church employees and volunteers who have been accused of PA child sex abuse, Time reports. Contact our team today to speak with a Pennsylvania Catholic Church sexual abuse attorney.

The list goes back nearly 8 decades to the 1940s. The latest represented allegation came in 2014. No one on the list, says Harrisburg Bishop Ronald Gainer, is currently engaged in ministry, but the Bishop admitted that the diocese’s leadership had failed to protect children from harm in the past.

Pennsylvania Dioceses Head Off Grand Jury Report With Lists Of Accused Priests

The release of the list comes just four months after a similar one, naming over 50 priests as accused abusers, was released the Church’s diocese in Erie, Pennsylvania. Erie’s diocese identified over 50 priests and church members who had been accused of sexual abuse over the years.

Pennsylvania dioceses are hoping to get out ahead of a 900-page state grand jury report, expected in the coming week, which names some 300 “predator priests.” The culmination of 2 years, the state grand jury report covers 6 dioceses in Pennsylvania: Erie, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Allentown and Scranton.

A prior report found evidence of systemic sexual abuse within the church’s Philadelphia and Altoona-Johnstown dioceses. The allegations have been culled from internal church documents, police reports and civil church sex abuse lawsuits.

Harrisburg Diocese Outlines Sex Abuse Reforms

But releasing the list of accused pedophiles is just one step in Gainer’s march toward greater transparency, the Bishop said in a press release. The Harrisburg diocese is currently making a list of all buildings and properties named after clergy members; it plans to remove the names of priests accused of abuse.

The church has also taken the unusual step of rescinding its right to confidentiality so that details from past settlement agreements can be released into the public domain. Going forward, the diocese has committed itself to new abuse reporting procedures.

From here on out, all complaints of sex abuse will be immediately forwarded to law enforcement officials. Anyone working for the church, including volunteers, will receive background checks. A new training program will be required for all diocese employees.
