History

The city continued to thrive throughout the 1900s and became known for its mansions built by wealthy businessmen in the area. By the mid-1930s, Scranton hosted a population of 140,000.

The city was still considered a thriving mining industry center until 1959, when the city experienced The Knox Mine Disaster, a large mining accident that left 12 workers dead.

In the 1980s, Scranton reinvented itself and became known for its deep history and tourist attractions.
