Portage: Through the Centuries

Portage is a city in the Portage Township of Porter County, Indiana. As the largest city in the county, it is also the third-largest in Northwest Indiana. Before European settlement, the area was inhabited by Mound Builders, the Wea tribe and the Potawatomi tribe. Some of the first settlers to the area of Portage were:

  • Samuel Putnam Robbins
  • Joseph Wolf
  • Berret Door
  • Reuben Hurlburt
  • Wilford Parrott
  • The Spurloch brothers
  • William McCool
  • Benjamin James
  • Allen James
  • William Holms
  • Jacob Black

In 1812, the community of Grayton was established in Portage Township. This community, along with McCool and Crisman, was incorporated as the town of Portage later on.

Before the mid-1800s, Portage Township was a farming community. However, when Michigan Central, the first railroad in the area, was completed, it enabled local farmers to ship livestock, crops, dairy, and sand to Chicago and other stops along the way.

Although the Great Depression caused many farmers in Portage to lose their farms, the high production and labor demand of World War I and World War II brought on tremendous growth to its economy. After the war, National Steel and Bethlehem Steep opened their plant in Portage. The Port of Indiana was also constructed in 1961 to assist with trade via Lake Michigan. In 1959, the town of Portage was incorporated. In 1967, it officially became a city. As of 2010, the city has a total area of 27.614 square miles and a population of 36,828 people. Portage still primarily depends on the steel industry; however, the Community Organization on Industrial Location (C.O.I.L) has been formed to help diversify its industries.
