Fortuna Foothills is a census-designated place, or CDP, in the county of Yuma, Arizona. Part of the Yuma Metropolitan Statistical Area, the area was first developed in the 1960s after Hank Schechert, a local developer, purchased 3,000 acres to the east of Yuma. As of the 2010 census, the CDP has a population of 26,265 people and a total area of 40.0 square miles. It is located within proximity to the communities of El Prado Estates, Blaisdell, Kinter, Dome, and Ligurta. Interstate bisects the area going east to west.
Situated to the northeast of Fortuna Foothills over the Gila Mountains is the Muggins Mountain Wilderness. Operated by the Bureau of Land Management of the U.S. Department of the Interior, the wilderness area became part of the more than 109 million acre National Wilderness Preservation System that was established by the Wilderness Act of 1964. The 7,711-acre wilderness area consists of the highest peak in the southern part of the Muggins Mountains. It is ideal for recreational activities like rock climbing, hiking, backpacking, photography, sightseeing, and the studying of native plants, nature and wildlife. It is highly suggested that visitors of Muggins Mountain Wilderness use the Leave No Trace techniques when exploring the area in order to protect its unique natural and experiential qualities.
Telegraph Pass is a highway pass on I-8 through the Gila Mountains in Fortuna Foothills. Opened in 1967, the pass was named after a telegraph line running from San Diego, California, to Maricopa Wells, Arizona. Located near the historical landmark is the popular hiking trail, the Telegraph Pass Trailhead.
The Telegraph Pass Trailhead is a 5.3-mile loop trail in Fortuna Foothills. Heavily trafficked, the trail offers the right level of difficulty to hike. It is best used from October until March and is home to a variety of beautiful wildflowers. Once you've hiked to the top, the view is also spectacular. The trail is good for walking, hiking, mountain biking, running, nature trips, bird watching and more. It is also kid and dog friendly.
Situated at the junction of Fortuna Road and Frontage Road are several shopping plazas that serve the residents and visitors of the Fortuna Foothills CDP, including Pioneer Center. These plazas offer various of retailers, services and dining options.
