A Jersey City youth baseball coach who admitted to having molested multiple young boys has been sentenced to 20 years in a state psychological facility. Authorities say that John Mercado, 58, assaulted at least five boys over the course of a three-decade career in coaching. The most recent known abuse case occurred between 2004 and 2006, NJ.com reports.
Were you or a loved one abused by John Mercado? In August, Mercado pleaded guilty on five counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault and two counts of second-degree sexual assault. Most of his victims were boys he coached in baseball. If you or your child was abused, our experienced personal injury attorneys are here to help.
A sexual abuse lawsuit may be possible.
Thankfully, John Mercado has been held accountable by the criminal justice system. As a compulsive repeat sexual offender, he will be required to live the rest of his life under supervision. Hopefully, these measures will ensure that Mercado never victimizes another child again, but he has yet to be held accountable directly to his victims. We believe the survivors of Mercado's abuse deserve justice. You may be eligible to file a New Jersey sexual abuse lawsuit to pursue justice on your own terms.
In a civil lawsuit, John Mercado can be held accountable for his misconduct. Survivors and their loved ones are allowed to demand significant financial compensation to support their continued recovery. Additional third-party defendants may also be found liable, including the sports leagues for which Mercado coached and the schools at which he worked.
Don't hesitate to act now. Justice is possible, but New Jersey's statute of limitations on sexual abuse allegations may restrict the amount of time you are granted to file suit.

John Mercado had a long and varied educational career in New Jersey. At the time of his arrest, Mercado held coaching positions for the Pershing Field Babe Ruth League and the Hudson County CYO League. He also ran a series of summer baseball camps. He worked as a computer teacher at Hoboken Catholic Academy from 1998 to 2004. Most recently, he served as an administrative assistant and athletic director at Elysian Charter School in Hoboken, coaching track and basketball.
Mercado was caught after a victim came forward to accuse him of abuse. While the victim's case could not be prosecuted due to the statute of limitations, police called Mercado in for an interview, during which the baseball coach admitted guilt in the molestation of five boys. Elysian Charter School immediately suspended Mercado without pay, then fired him.
