About Jefferson Hills

Jefferson Hills is a borough within Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Established as Jefferson Township on January 22, 1828, the area was named in honor of Thomas Jefferson. In 1914, it became a first class township and was chartered as a borough in 1950. Until 1998, the borough was known as Jefferson. It is situated along the southern border of Allegheny County and is primarily residential.

Thomas Jefferson High School

Thomas Jefferson High School is the 30th best public high school in the Pittsburgh area, according to Niche.com. The above-average school has a population of 917 students in grades 9 through 12. The high school has a Niche overall grade of a B plus and a GreatSchools rating of a 7 out of 10. Part of the West Jefferson Hills School District, it serves the communities of Jefferson Hills, Pleasant Hills and West Elizabeth. Thomas Jefferson High School can be found on Old Clairton Road.

Recreation

The Borough of Jefferson Hills Department of Parks and Recreation operates five parks in the municipality. This includes:

  • Andrew Reilly Memorial Park
  • Beedle Park
  • Gill Hall Park
  • Lobb's Park
  • Tepe Park

These parks provide recreational amenities like baseball fields, softball fields, football fields, basketball and tennis courts and playgrounds. It also offers pavilions, picnic tables, grills and more for friends and families to gather and hang out.

The borough is also part of the Great Allegheny Passage, which is a 150-mile system of biking and hiking trails that runs from Cumberland, Maryland, to Pittsburgh. In 2006, the Great Allegheny Passage partnered with the C & O Canal Trail to create an additional 318-mile-long trail going from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. The two trail systems that are within Jefferson Hills are the Montour Trail and Steel Valley Trail.
