Overview of Pulaski

Pulaski is a town in the county of Pulaski, Virginia. The county seat of Pulaski County, it is part of the Blacksburg-Christiansburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1886, the area was incorporated as a town. Pulaski was named after Revolutionary War hero Count Casimir Pulaski. On April 8, 2001, two tornadoes hit the town, destroying 31 buildings and causing around $1.68 million in damages.

Historic Sites

Within the town of Pulaski, there are many historic sites that were added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). This includes the following:

Calfee Athletic Field

Calfee Athletic Field is a stadium built in 1935 in Pulaski as a Works Progress Administration project. Primarily used for baseball, it is the home ballpark of the Pulaski River Turtles in the Appalachian League. In 2015, the Shelor ownership group bought the park from the Town of Pulaski. Owned and operated by David Hagan and Larry Shelor, over $9 million in renovations were made to it. Today, the historic park features a press box, VIP towers, home clubhouse, visiting clubhouse, jumbotron, 18 additional outdoor suits, upgraded souvenirs, concession stands, additional general admission seatings, padded club seating, a picnic pavilion, three-tiered party deck, and walk-in retail store. On November 22, 2000, it was listed on the NRHP. In 2019 and 2020, it was voted as the best rookie-level ballpark in America in Ballpark Digest's annual Best of the Ballparks competition.

Dalton Theatre Building

Dalton Theatre Building was built in 1921. The historic theatre consisted of a three-story, five-bay, brick building with a flat roof topped by a one-story central tower. Designed in the Beaux Arts style, the gable-roofed auditorium was situated at the rear of the building, with the five-story equipment tower. In 2979, the Dalton Theatre Building was added to the NRHP. In 1982, its auditorium collapsed.

Pulaski County Courthouse

Pulaski County Courthouse was designed by W. Chamberlian & Co. Built between 1895 and 1896, the 2 and 1/2-story historic courthouse is of the Romanesque and Queen Anne architectural styles. On July 8, 1982, it was added to the NRHP.

Pulaski Historic Commercial District

Pulaski Historic Commercial District was listed on the NRHP in 1986. It is a national historic site that encompasses 78 buildings and one site in the central business district of the town of Pulaski. Notable governmental, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings in the district include the MaGill building, B.D. Smith and Bros. building, Elks Theatre and building, Pulaski Grocery COmpany building, Appalachian Power Company building, Christy Episcopal Church, the Dalton Theatre Building, and Pulaski County Courthouse.

Pulaski Historic Residential District

Another national historic site of the town, the Pulaski Historic Residential District was added to the NRHP on August 11, 1988. It features 278 buildings in a primarily residential area of the town. Notable non-residential buildings in the district are the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the First Baptist Church, the law office of Samuel N. Hurst, and Pulaski Women's Club.

Pulaski South Historic Residential and Industrial District

Located south of Commerce St., the Pulaski South Historic Residential and Industrial District were developed between 1800 and 1940. It encompasses a residential and industrial development area on the south side of the town of Pulaski. In 1991, the district was listed on the NRHP.

Gatewood Park and Reservoir

Accessible from Interstates 77 and 81, Gatewood Park and Reservoir is owned by the Town of Pulaski. It is situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia. The park offers visitors 400 acres of tranquil and scenic views.
