About Logansport

Logansport is a city in Cass County, Indiana. Located in the northern part of Indiana, at the junction of the Wabash River and the Eel River, it is also the county seat of Cass County. The city was settled around 1826 and named after James Logan, a Shawnee warrior who served as a scout for U.S. forces around the area in the War of 1812.

In 1837, the Wabash and Erie Canal reached the area. Subsequently, the "port" was added to the city's name. Logansport was also served by the Historic Michigan Road and a number of passenger and freight train routes. This led to the diverse transportation history of the city. Today, the main roads serving Logansport Indiana State Road 17, Indiana State Road 25, U.S. Route 35, Main Street, Humphrey Street, Monticello Road, Morgan Hill Road, Market Street, and High Street.

In 2008, the city was designated as a Preserve America Community by former First Lady Laura Bush. Logansport was awarded the distinction for protecting and celebrating their heritage, using their historic assets for community revitalization and economic development, and encouraging people to appreciate and experience local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs. As of 2010, the city has a population of 18,396.

Cass County Dentzel Carousel

Cass County Dentzel Carousel is a historic carousel built around 1900 by the Dentzel Carousel Company. Situated in Riverside Park in Logansport, it is one of the oldest surviving menagerie-style carousels of the company. The carousel was originally built for Robinson Park of the Fort Wayne Consolidated Railway Company. However, after the park closed in 1919, it was moved to Spencer Park in Logansport and then Riverside Park in 1949. In 1972, it was acquired by the non-profit Cass County Carousel and underwent a complete restoration in 1993. Riders of the carousal often attempt to grab onto a brass ring in a game that has led to the "Logansport – Cass County: Grab the brass ring" economic development slogan. On February 27, 1987, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL).
