A disturbing case of alleged sexual abuse in Ellicott City, Maryland, has emerged involving a local business owner and a teenage employee. This incident highlights the importance of vigilance and protection for minors in the workplace.

Details of the Arrest

Joshua Durek, a 54-year-old business owner from Ellicott City, was arrested on August 23, 2024, on charges of sexual abuse of a minor and third- and fourth-degree sex offenses. The alleged abuse took place on August 16 at Durek's home, involving a 16-year-old boy employed by his small business.

Investigation and Police Response

Howard County Police were notified of the incident on August 17 and promptly opened an investigation. Durek turned himself in to the authorities on August 23 and is currently being held at the Howard County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.

Potential for Additional Victims

Investigators have revealed that Durek has employed juveniles in the past through his small business. Additionally, he served as a volunteer coach at Centennial High School from 2007 to 2010 and is known to regularly attend athletic events at the school.

Call for Information

The Howard County Police Department is urging any additional victims or individuals with relevant information to come forward. They can contact the police at 410-313-STOP or email HCPDCrimeTips@howardcountymd.gov.

Importance of Workplace Safety for Minors

This case underscores the critical need for robust safeguards to protect young employees in the workplace. Employers must implement stringent policies and background checks to ensure the safety of all workers, especially minors.

Attorney Commentary

Aaron Blank, Esq., a seasoned attorney specializing in cases involving the abuse of minors, offers his perspective on this case: "The allegations against Joshua Durek are deeply troubling and highlight the vulnerability of young employees in small business settings. Parents and guardians must be aware of their children's work environments, and employers must implement strict safeguards to protect minors. As this case unfolds, it's important to remember that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. However, the call for additional victims to come forward suggests that law enforcement believes there may be a pattern of behavior. This case is a stark reminder of the importance of thorough background checks and ongoing vigilance in protecting our youth in all settings, including the workplace."
