A school principal and former track coach in Barstow has been accused of sexual misconduct. In 2015, Mark Lesley Hassell, 39, was arrested and charged for maintaining an illicit sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student. Hassell resigned immediately and soon lost his credentials. He ultimately pleaded no contest to one count of oral copulation with a minor and was sentenced to one year in county jail and five years of probation.

In 2015, the Barstow Police Department received a report that Hassell had been engaged in an illicit relationship with a 17-year-old student. Detectives interviewed the victim, who said she had been involved in a consensual sexual relationship with Hassell "for some time." After further investigation, the authorities deemed the allegations to be true and arrested Hassell.
Hassell was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave, but resigned soon after. Prior to becoming the school's principal, Hassell served as the head boys basketball coach and head coach of the girls track and field team at Barstow High School. He was also an assistant for the Barstow High School football team during the 2014 season, according to the Daily Press.
While authorities have only heard from one victim of David Hassell, police believe that additional victims may still be out there.
