Matthew Kole was arrested in January 2017 by Newton County sheriff's police after authorities received a report from the victim's mother. In court documents, Kole was initially charged with felony sexual battery, rape and criminal confinement of a 16-year-old juvenile. If convicted on all three charges, he would have spent between 3 and 16 years in prison.
The victim told authorities that she had met Kole on Facebook and that the former teacher and coach forced her to have sex in January 2016. Police believe Kole abused the young girl on at least two occasions, once in Bradley and again in Newton County. The victim was reportedly a student at Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School.
Ultimately, Kole pleaded guilty to the charge of criminal confinement. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison. The additional charges against him were dropped in exchange for his plea deal.
