Meadville is the first permanent settlement in Northwestern Pennsylvania. Also the county seat of Crawford County, the city is the principal city of the Meadville, PA Micropolitan Statistical Area and one of two cities that make up the Erie-Meadville, AP Combined Statistical Area. The area that is now Meadville was once a large meadow cleared by Cheif Custaloga of the Delawares people to build the village of Cassewago. On May 12, 1788, a group of settlers led by David Mead settled in the area. They befriended the Iroquois and Lenape people but made enemies with the Wyandots.
After the American Revolutionary War, many veterans received land bounties for their services, and Meadville was flooded with settlers. In 1837, the town became an important transportation center because of the French Creek Feeder Canal, the Beaver and Erie Canal and railroad development. During the late 1700s and early 1800s, it played a part in the Underground Railroad by helping escaping slaves to freedom.
By the late 1800s, Meadville's economy included agriculture, logging and iron production. The Talon Corporation, the first zipper manufacturing company, kept the city afloat during the Great Depression as more people moved to the area to work in the company. During World War II, the Keystone Ordnance plant also provided jobs in the area.
Although Talon Corp. has gone bankrupt and is no longer evident in Meadville, a cottage industry of tool and die shops was born from the need for tool and die makers and close tolerance. The city is now home to more tool shops per capita than any other place in the U.S. and is nicknamed "Tool City." A notable tool company in Meadville is the Champion–DeArment Tool Company, which was established by George B. DeArment, a blacksmith from Evansburg, PA, in 1886 as he moved from town to town selling his hand-forged farrier's tools. As of the 2010 census, Meadville has a population of 13,388 people and a total area of 4.4 square miles.

The Baldwin-Reynolds House Museum was built by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Henry Baldwin in 1843. However, he died shortly after its completion. The house served as a girls' school for three years before it was acquired by William Reynolds, a local businessman. It is now a museum of history, the arts and cultural experiences of northwest PA. Free tours are offered in the summer.
The Meadville Market House is an important historical building in Meadville. Situated in the downtown area of the city, it is the oldest market structure that is still running in the state. Today, it is a hub for local farmers and hosts farmers' markets every Saturday.
Diamond Park is a recreation park in Meadville. The central park is bounded by Walnut Street, Diamond Park Square and Chestnut Street. It was once used as a militia drill ground in the 1800s. Today, the park offers amenities like a gazebo, park benches, paved paths, and open space. It also features a number of statues and monuments.
Allegheny College was established in 1815 by Reverend Timothy Alden. It is the oldest college west of the Allegheny Mountains to be continuously run under the same name. The private liberal arts college is part of the North Coast Athletic Conference and the Great Lakes Colleges Association. It has been regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The college offers 28 majors and 41 minors.
