Pennsylvania stands at the center of this emerging issue. In 2017, two massage therapists who worked at Hand and Stone locations in Langhorne and Philadelphia were convicted for sexual offenses. If sexual assaults have yet to be reported in connection to these additional locations, a new wave of sexual assault lawsuits could be on the way.
Every business in America, including massage spas, have an ethical and legal obligation to provide their clients with adequate protection against dangerous sexual predators. Massage businesses, in particular, must be careful to adequately background check prospective employees and ensure that their massage licenses are up to date.
All of these steps are designed to keep clients safe, but in recent lawsuits, sexual assault survivors accuse Hand and Stone franchises of failing to do so. Lawsuits are also being filed against Hand and Stone's corporate office, with claims that the company's executives failed to put in place adequate franchise-level measures to filter out dangerous sexual predators.
Many victims have also taken issue with Hand and Stone's protocols for reporting the assault to law enforcement and following up with victims after assault complaints have been filed.
