Magic Gardens is located in the heart of Philly and offers visitors a captivating experience where media art is blended with gorgeous and colorful mosaics. Creator, Isaiah Zagar is responsible for the unique and eco-friendly use of objects to create his art such as bottles, tiles, wheels, glass, mirrors, and other sorts of knickknacks.
The nonprofit museum offers a variety of community outreach programs from public programs, exhibitions, showcases, tours, activities, and workshops.
Zagar has been a resident of South Street since the 1960s and has since decided to dedicate his time to transforming the neighborhood into works of art on both private and public buildings. He and his team of activists and artists have successfully gentrified the streets by creating mosaics, murals, and artistic drawings over the last few decades.
In 1991, Zagar made his first mosaic on a vacant lot near his studio on South Street, he spent years sculpting by using objects and items he'd repurpose and display on walls. Several years later, the owner of the lot where Zagar made his first installation, chose to sell it, which would cause his art to be destroyed.
The art community of South Street refused to see that happen and helped form the wall installation into what it is today, Philadelphia's Magic Gardens nonprofit organization. Zagar continued to expand the nonprofit and eventually opened to the public in 2008 with tons of activities, concerts, immerse experiences and so much more.
