Phoenixville is a borough located at the junction of French Creek and Schuylkill River. Part of Chester County, it is also within the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area. The area was settled in 1732 and was originally known as Manavon. In 1849, it was incorporated as a borough. The Phoenixville Borough was an important manufacturing center in the early 1900s. The name of Phoenixville actually came from the Phoenix Iron Works. Established in 1790 as the French Creek Nail Works, it was the first nail factory in the nation. The factory was renamed the Phoenix Iron Works when bridge builder Lewis Wernwag became part owner in 1813. After adding a blast furnace and being incorporated as the Phoenix Iron Co., it was the major employer of the area. So, during the incorporation of the borough, Phoenixville was chosen.
Phoenixville is home to the largest National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) site in Chester County. Featuring the oldest part of the borough, the Phoenix Historic District depicts the history of Phoenixville. It includes 908 contributing buildings, one contributing structure, and 52 non-contributing buildings. On March 17, 1987, the district was added to the NRHP. The former Phoenix Iron Works sit and its owner and employee housing establishments are within the district.
Besides having the most breweries per square foot in the U.S., there are many attractions for residents and visitors in Phoenixville. Among one of "The Most Charming Towns and Small Cities in Pennsylvania," according to TravelMag, the borough is situated within proximity to the Perkiomen and Schuylkill River trails. For those who enjoy outdoor adventures, the Valley Forge National Historical Park is also a close distance from the area.
Another special feature of Phoenixville is its festival and events. The Firebird Festival has been held since 2004 to celebrate the "rebirth" of the town. It includes the burning of a large wooden phoenix. This bonfire is used to harden clay birds that were crafted prior to the festival. The A Whole Lot of LuLu event is also hosted in the borough. Held twice a year, it is a vintage and handmade market showcasing arts and crafts done by local artisans.
The Colonial Theatre was constructed in 1903 as the Colonial Opera House. In the 1900s, it was a popular venue for movies, live entertainment and traveling shows. Today, the three-screen venue comprises of the original 658-seat vaudeville house and two additional theatres constructed in the adjacent National Bank of Phoenixville building in 2016. The Colonial hosts a series of movies and events for children, as well as special programs in July. Because the theatre was featured in the motion picture movie The Blob, the Blobfest is held annually by Phoenixville to celebrate this.
