In a recent civil trial, a jury ordered Camden's school district and its school board President Wasim Muhammad to pay $1.6 million in damages to a woman who accused Muhammad of sexual abuse dating back to when she was a pre-teen student.

Case Background

The NJ sexual abuse lawsuit, filed in 2021, alleged that Muhammad, then known as Don Walker, sexually abused the plaintiff when she was a student at Cooper B. Hatch Middle School in the 1990s. The woman claimed the abuse began when she was in 7th grade and continued for several years.

Jury Verdict

The jury's decision was complex:

  • They did not find Muhammad guilty of assault, battery, or child sexual abuse
  • However, they determined that Muhammad and the district acted in a way that violated the woman's rights and caused her lasting emotional distress
  • The jury assigned 60% of the liability to the school district and 40% to Muhammad

Implications for the School District

The Camden City School District, which has been under state control since 2013, now faces significant financial and ethical challenges:

  • The district may file a motion for a new trial and is considering an appeal
  • Questions remain about Muhammad's position on the school board, as he has been on a "leave of absence" since January 2024

Legal Perspectives

The case highlights the complexities of civil litigation in sexual abuse cases, particularly when they involve educational institutions.

Impact on the Survivor

Despite the mixed verdict, the plaintiff expressed gratitude for the jury's decision, stating that she felt vindicated. Her attorney, Jeff Fritz, emphasized the importance of the verdict in promoting school safety and accountability.

What Our Attorney Has To Share

Stewart Ryan, Esq., a seasoned attorney at Abuse Guardians, offers his perspective on the case: "This verdict underscores the critical importance of holding educational institutions accountable for the safety of their students. While the jury's decision was mixed, the substantial damages awarded send a clear message that schools must prioritize student protection. It's crucial for survivors to know that even years later, there are legal pathways to seek justice and promote institutional change."
