UCLA Gynecologist Accused Of Multiple Assaults

While Heaps has only been charged in relation to the assault of two women, he faces far more accusations of sexual assault. Most recently, a cancer patient who was treated by Heaps for mesothelioma filed a private civil lawsuit against the doctor and UCLA, accusing Heaps of inappropriately touching her vagina and breasts under the guise of medical examination.

UCLA is facing harsh criticism for its handling of the situation. Sexual assault survivors say the university failed to inform authorities of the allegations against Heaps after learning of them. Heaps has called the allegations against him "baseless."

At least 23 women have come forward to accuse Dr. Heaps of sexual assault during his time at UCLA. A further 75 people have contacted the university with information relevant to the investigation after the charges against Heaps were announced. The charges against Heaps were publicized in mid-June 2019, but authorities say at least one woman reported the doctor's alleged sexual misconduct to UCLA in December of 2017. Instead of removing Heaps from his practice, or warning other patients about the allegations against him, the school allowed Heaps to retire quietly in 2018.

Career History

Heaps served as a consulting physician at UCLA's student health center between 1983 and 2010. He maintained a private practice on the school's campus from 1991 to 2014, when he sold his practice to the school and became an employee. He was employed as an obstetrician-gynecologist by UCLA Health between 2014 and 2018, also serving on the Medical School's faculty. He retired in 2018 after the university informed him that his contract would not be renewed.
