Highland is a town in the North Township of Lake County, Indiana. As part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area, it is surrounded by the communities of Hammond to the north, Griffith to the east, Schererville to the south and Munster to the west. The first people to settle in the area were Michael and Judith Johnston, two pioneers from Ohio, in 1847. Until the early 1880s, expansion in the town happened very slowly. However, with the construction of the Chicago & Atlantic railroad tracks through the town, agriculture and manufacturing industries began to move into the area. In 1910, the Town of Highland was incorporated.
Highland, like many other areas along the Little Calumet River, is prone to flooding. Significant floods that affected the town happened in 2006, 2007 and 2008. As of the 2010 census, the town has a population of 23,727 people and a total area of 6.96 square miles.
Wicker Memorial Park was donated to the residents of Highland, Hammond, Munster, East Chicago and Whiting by 16 local men who purchased the property. It was named after the Wicker family, who previously owned the land. In 1927, former President Calvin Coolidge dedicated the park to the veterans of World War I. In 2008, Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama also stopped at the park for a rally just four days before he made history by becoming the first African-American president in the U.S.
