Get To Know Alhambra

Alhambra is an urban village in Phoenix, Arizona. It is bounded by Grand Avenue and the Grand Canal to the north, 43rd Avenue to the east, Northern Avenue to the south and 7th Street to the west. The village was established mainly to satisfy the housing needs of the growing population in Phoenix post World War II. Its name was chosen by William John Murphy, who sub-divided four areas in North Phoenix. As of the 2010 census, Alhambra has a population of 127,764 people and approximately an area of 20 square miles. According to Niche, it is the 11th best neighborhood to live in Phoenix.

Grand Canyon University

Grand Canyon University, or GCU, is a private Christian university in Alhambra on Camelback Road. Founded in 1949 by the Arizona Southern Baptists, it was a nonprofit institution in Prescott. On October 8, 1951, the college relocated to its current location. In 1984, it was leveled up to university status. After experiencing financial hardships and other difficulties in the early 2000s, the school was sold to California-based, Significant Education, LLC in January 2004. This made it the first for-profit Christian university in the U.S. and the first and only for-profit university to participate in NCAA Division I athletics. In 2018, its regional accreditor, Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education and the IRS approved the school's reversal to non-profit status. However, the U.S. Department of Education rejected it and continued to classify the university as a for-profit.

Since 2000, Grand Canyon University has not been affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. The university has a total enrollment of approximately 115,000 students and offers over 200 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs. Its 101-acre campus is home to nine colleges, which includes:

  • Colangelo College of Business
  • College of Science, Engineering, and Technology
  • College of Humanities, Social Sciences
  • College of Fine Arts and Production
  • College of Education
  • College of Nursing and Health Care Professions
  • College of Theology
  • GCU Honors College
  • College of Doctoral Studies

The university also provides over 70 student clubs and organizations. In 2021, it had an acceptance rate of 76.9%.
