The City of Columbus

Columbus is a city in Indiana. As the county seat of Bartholomew County, it is also the principal city of the Columbus, Indiana metropolitan statistical area. The area that is Columbus began in 1820 with a purchase of land by General John Tipton and Luke Bonesteel. After the purchase, Tipton proceeded to construct a log cabin on a small hill overlooking the White River. He called it Mount Tipton, and the town in the area became known as Tiptona. On March 20, 1821, its name was changed to Columbus. It has been perceived that the land that is now Columbus was donated by General Tipton; however, this was debunked in 2003 when the Historic Columbus Indiana acquired a deed that showed him selling the land.

Nonetheless, it was Joseph McKinney who was the first person to plot the town of Columbus. On June 28, 1864, the town of Columbus was incorporated. It was home to The Crump Theater, the oldest theater in Indiana, and the oldest continuously operating bookstore in the state, Cummins Bookstore, before it closed in 2007. Today, the city is the world's headquarters of the engine company Cummins, Inc. In 2008, the National Geographic Traveler ranked the city as number 11 on its historic destination list. Columbus has also won the "America in Bloom" national contest in 2006. As of the 2010 census, it has a population of 44,061 people and is the 20th largest city in the state.

Currently owned and managed by Cummins, it has been designated by the National Park Services on May 16, 2000, as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) for its unique and beautiful design. That same day, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
