Short History of Lower Burrell

Lower Burrell is a city within Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, it was once part of the hunting reserves of the Iroquois. In the 1760s, Europeans began to form permanent settlements in the area. By 1773, Westmoreland County was established. In 1852, Burrell Township was created from part of the Allegheny Township due to a rise in population. In 1879, the area was once again separated when Burrell Township was divided into the Upper Burrell Township and Lower Burrell Township.

As Upper Burrell Township remained primarily rural, the Lower Burrell Township became a residential and commercial area. In 1959, it was given a third class city status. The city grew until the 1980s, when most of Western Pennsylvania suffered from the collapse of local heavy industry. As of the 2019 census estimate, Lower Burrell has a population of 11,078 and a total area of 11.8 square miles.
