Description of Greensburg

Greensburg is a city in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Also the seat of the county, it is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area and is a major academic, cultural, business and tourism center in Western Pennsylvania. Its history dates back to the establishment of an inn built after the Revolutionary War on a wagon trail stretching from Philadelphia to Fort Pitt (now Pittsburgh). The settlement of Newtown grew shortly after around the inn.

In 1785, it became the county seat of Westmoreland County. On December 10th of the same year, Christopher Turby and William Jack were contracted by county officials to buy two acres of land in Newtown to erect public buildings. The first building that was developed in the town was a courthouse and jail built of heavy planks and logs. The area was soon renamed Greenburg for American Revolutionary War Major General of the Continental Army Nathanael Greene. On February 9, 1799, Greensburg was incorporated as the first borough of the county.

Greensburg didn't begin growing until the mid to late-1800s with the discovery of soft coal nearby. The borough became the center of a mining industry, making ways for more inns and small businesses to establish in the area. On January 2, 1928, the status of Greensburg was changed to a City of the Third Class. At the 2010 census, the city had a population of 14,892 people.
