Sun City is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Maricopa County, Arizona. Situated within the Phoenix metropolitan area, it was opened on January 1, 1960, with five home models, a recreation center, a shopping center and a golf course. The retirement community was established on the site of the former town of Marinette. Developed by Del E. Webb, it is popular among snowbirds – someone who migrates from the northern parts of North America to warmer states in the south during the winter season.
In 1972, the city was the center of the Spur Industries, Inc. v. Del E. Webb Development Co. Featured in mostly every first-year law course to illustrate nuisance law, the case was between a livestock feedlot and the developer of a retirement community, respectively. Although these two companies started small and away from one another, as they grew and expanded, the smell of manure and the infestation of flies from the former was affecting the residents of Sun City and inhibiting its future sales. The Supreme Court of Arizona ruled in favor of Del E. Webb Development and ordered Spur to be shut down. However, Webb was responsible for paying Spur for his losses.
As of the 2010 census, the community has a people of 37,499 people. It is within proximity to the areas of El Mirage, Youngtown, Surprise, Sun City West, Bumstead, Peoria, Camino A Lago, and Fletcher Heights. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.6 square miles.
