Hi - I’m Reed. I am a lawyer licensed to practice law in Kansas. Our attorneys fight every day for the rights of sexual abuse victims in Kansas City, Wichita and other cities across the state. My team and I are ready to help.
The small town of Wamego, Kansas, was shaken by recent allegations of inappropriate conduct between a teacher and a student at Wamego Middle School. Allen Sylvester, a long-time employee of USD 320 since 2011, has been formally charged with one count of unlawful sexual relations between a teacher and a student in Kansas.
The Wabaunsee County Attorney's office filed the charge against Sylvester, stating that the alleged crime occurred during the 2020/2021 school year. The student involved was 17 years old at the beginning of the period in question and turned 18 during that time.
USD 320 Superintendent Greg Mann confirmed that two employees, a husband and wife, were placed on administrative leave in connection with the investigation. Mann stated that the district is cooperating fully with local law enforcement and taking the allegations very seriously.
The charge of unlawful sexual relations between a teacher and a student is a serious offense in Kansas. It highlights the importance of maintaining appropriate boundaries between educators and students, even when the student is of legal age.
In light of this incident, schools across the country should consider:
This case has undoubtedly had a significant impact on the Wamego community. It serves as a reminder of the trust placed in educators and the devastating consequences when that trust is broken.
Reed Martens, Esq., a school abuse attorney at Abuse Guardians, comments on the case:
"The charges against Allen Sylvester underscore the critical importance of safeguarding students from all forms of abuse, including those perpetrated by trusted authority figures. Schools have a legal and moral obligation to create a safe environment for students. This case should prompt all educational institutions to review and strengthen their policies regarding teacher-student interactions and reporting procedures for suspected misconduct. Parents and students should be aware of their rights and the resources available to them if they suspect any form of abuse or inappropriate behavior."
