All About Hershey

Hershey is a census-designated place (CDP) and an unincorporated community in Derry Township of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Part of the Harrisburg-Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area, the town was founded by the Hershey Company in 1903 for its workers. The community included the following:

  • Electricity
  • Indoor plumbing
  • Central heating
  • A public trolley system
  • A free school for children of employees
  • A free vocational school for orphaned and underprivileged boys
  • An amusement park
  • A community center
  • A hotel
  • A zoo
  • A sports area
  • Golf courses

The purpose of creating the town with such features was to provide "a perfect American town in a [rural] natural setting, where healthy, right-living and well-paid workers [can live] in safe, happy homes."

As of the 2010 census, the CDP has a population of 14,257 people. Because it was founded by Hershey and is home to The Hershey Company, the motto of the community is "The Sweetest Place on Eart." Its street lamps are shaped like Hershey Kisses.
