Rio Rico is a census-designated place (CDP) within Santa Cruz County, Arizona. Located north of Nogales at the confluence of the Santa Cruz River and the Sonoita Creek, the CDP has a total area of 62.3 square miles. It is made up of the former CDPs of Rio Rico Southeast, Rio Rico Southwest, Rio Rico Northwest and Rio Rico Northeast. Sonoita Creek State Natural Area is a preserve managed by the Arizona State Parks Department. Situated downstream from Patagonia Lake State Park, the initial 4,914 acres of the SCSNA was acquired on December 20, 1993. In 1995, an additional 3,033 acres of State Trust Land owned by the State Land Department was purchased by the State Parks Board. On February 19, 2000, the SCSNA was officially opened. Today, the natural area is even bigger with the purchase of another 259 acres of land from the Rio Rico Properties in 2003.
SCSNA is a beautiful scenic place for visitors to take in the history, wildlife and interesting vegetation of the area. Twenty miles of trails are accessible for hiking throughout the area. Overlook Trail – a 1.5-mile trail – offers a moderately difficult hike close to the Patagonia Lake State Park and features a spectacular 360 degrees view of the scenery. The area also provides eight miles of trails for horseback riding. The entrance gate for the SCSNA is open daily from 4:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Rio Rico Plaza is a shopping area on Yavapai Drive, just to the left of Interstate 19. Although small, the shopping center still offers residents in the area with stores and services that provide them with their daily necessities. This includes Garrett's IGA Supermarket, Wells Fargo Bank and Lava Express Car Wash. The plaza also features dining options like Nickel's Diner, Little Ceasar's Pizza, and Subway.
