About Tuckahoe

Tuckahoe is an upper middle-class suburb west of Richmond. Part of Henrico County, the census-designated place (CDP) is home to some of the most expensive residential real estate in the Richmond area. It is named after Thomas Randolph's Tuckahoe Plantation that still remains in the area. According to the United States Census Bureau, Tuckahoe has a total area of 21.8 square miles. Its weather is hot and humid during the summers and cold during the winters.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, Tuckahoe has a population of 44,990 people and a population density of 2,102.7 people per square mile. The racial makeup for the area was the following:

  • 2.5% Two or More Races

  • 0.1% Native American
  • 0.07% Pacific Islander

Within the CDP are also 18,126 households and 11,963 families. The households consist of:

  • 29.8% with Children under 18
  • 34.0% were Non-Families
  • 28.4% were Individuals
  • 11.1% had Someone 65 or Older
  • 8.6% had Female Householders

They make, on average, around $65,420 a year. The per capita income of Tuckahoe was $41,883. Approximately 4.0% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Redesdale

Redesdale is a Georgian Revival-style historic country home in Tuckahoe. Designed by architect Williamrence Bottomley, it was built in 1925 and 1926 for tobacco executive Leslie H. Reed and his wife. The property features a garden terrace and walled garden that was designed by Charles Gillette and two slave quarters. On December 5, 2007, Redesdale was designated on the Virginia Landmarks Register (VLR). On February 21, 2008, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

University of Richmond

Situated just outside the southeastern portion of Tuckahoe is the University of Richmond. The private liberal arts university officially opened as Richmond College on January 2, 1843. In 1920, the school was renamed the University of Richmond. It has an enrollment of around 4,350 undergraduate and graduate students. Schools offered at the institution are the E. Claiborne Robins School of Business, the School of Arts and Sciences, the University of Richmond School of Law, the Jepson School of Leadership and Studies, and the School of Professional & Continuing Studies. In 2013, the Ryland Hall, North Court, and Henry Mansfield Cannon Memorial Chapel located on the university's campus were listed on the NRHP.
