Tuckahoe is an upper middle-class suburb west of Richmond. Part of Henrico County, the census-designated place (CDP) is home to some of the most expensive residential real estate in the Richmond area. It is named after Thomas Randolph's Tuckahoe Plantation that still remains in the area. According to the United States Census Bureau, Tuckahoe has a total area of 21.8 square miles. Redesdale is a Georgian Revival-style historic country home in Tuckahoe. Designed by architect Williamrence Bottomley, it was built in 1925 and 1926 for tobacco executive Leslie H. Reed and his wife. The property features a garden terrace and walled garden that was designed by Charles Gillette and two slave quarters. On December 5, 2007, Redesdale was designated on the Virginia Landmarks Register (VLR). On February 21, 2008, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
Situated just outside the southeastern portion of Tuckahoe is the University of Richmond. The private liberal arts university officially opened as Richmond College on January 2, 1843. In 1920, the school was renamed the University of Richmond. It has an enrollment of around 4,350 undergraduate and graduate students. Schools offered at the institution are the E. Claiborne Robins School of Business, the School of Arts and Sciences, the University of Richmond School of Law, the Jepson School of Leadership and Studies, and the School of Professional & Continuing Studies. In 2013, the Ryland Hall, North Court, and Henry Mansfield Cannon Memorial Chapel located on the university's campus were listed on the NRHP.
