About Chandler

Chandler is a suburb in the Phoenix, Arizona, Metropolitan Statistical Area. Part of Maricopa County, it is bordered by Tempe on the north and west, Mesa on the north, Phoenix on the west, the Gila River Indian Community on the south, and Gilbert on the east. The city dates back to 1891 when the first veterinary surgeon in Arizona Territory, Dr. Alexander John Chandler, settled in Mesa. Approximately 10 years later, he had purchased 18,000 acres of land and planned the townsite of Chandler Ranch.

On May 16, 1912, the town office was opened. By 1913, a town center was developed with the first grass golf course in Arizona at the hotel San Marcos. On February 16, 1920, Chandler was incorporated with A. J. Chandler as its first president and mayor. The city survived through the Great Depression; however, the cotton crash several years later caused a major impact on the residents. In 1941, the Williams Air Force Base was founded. This led to a slight increase in Chandler's population.

Nonetheless, it wasn't until manufacturing plants like Microchip, Intel and Motorola moved into the city when the population started to exponentially grow again. In 2010, the National Civic League named Chandler as an All-America City. Today, it is one of the fastest growing municipalities in the U.S., with a population of around 261,165 people as of 2019.
