Brief History of Franklin

Franklin is an independent city of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Situated at the southwesternmost end of the Hampton Roads region, it was a railroad stop along the Blackwater River – which was used for the transportation of goods to and from Albemarle Sound, North Carolina – in the 1830s. During the American Civil War, the Joint Expedition Against Franklin occurred on the Blackwater River. The United States Army and Navy teamed up to pass through Franklin via the river. However, the Confederate States Army opened fire on the ships. The battle led to five causalities killed in action and 21 wounded.

Two decades after the war, Franklin began growing when six brothers of the Camp family acquired a small mill alongside the Blackwater River. With the leadership of the Camp family, the mill went through 20 years of rapid growth. In 1890, the Atlantic and Danville Railway added a stop in Franklin. After World War I, the city of Franklin was said to be a booming wartime village. The Camp Corporation continued succeeding and giving back to Franklin and the residents living in it. When the corporation merged with the Union Bag and Paper company in 1956, the Union Camp Corporation was established. It, along with the city, grew until Franklin became an independent city in 1961. Today, Union Camp no longer exists in the city. However, the Camp family legacy still lives on in the community as some of the establishments are named after them. This include:

  • Paul D. Camp Community College
  • James L Camp Jr. YMCA
  • Texie Camp Marks Children's Center
  • Ruth Camp Campbell Memorial Library
