Lexington is an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The county seat of Rockbridge County, it has a population of 7,042 as of the 2010 census. The city of Lexington was settled in 1778. It is the first of many American places to be named after Lexington, Massachusetts. During the American Civil War, David Hunter, a Union General, led a raid on Virginia Military Institute in Lexington. Two of the best known Confederate generals, Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, are buried within the city.
The city of Lexington has many interesting sites visitors can check out when they're in and around the area. Some of the points of interest include the Robert E. Lee gravesite in Lee Chapel on the Washington and Lee University campus, his horse's gravesite just outside of the chapel, and Thomas Jackson's gravesite at Oak Grove Cemetery. For individuals who don't find pleasure in viewing where the dead are buried, they can check out Stonewall Jackson House – the only residential of Confederate general Thomas Jackson when he was alive. Another interesting sire is the Goerge C. Marshall Foundation. Located on the Post of the Virginia Military Institute, it was commissioned by former President Harry S. Truman to preserve the papers of General George C. Marshall.

Virginia Military Institute (VMI) was established in 1839 as a public senior military college. As America's first state military college, it is also the oldest public senior military college in the U.S. VMI can be found on Letcher Ave. in Lexington. Unlike other senior military colleges, it only enrolls cadets and only awards bachelor's degrees. Abraham Lincoln has coined the school "The West Point of the South."
Washington and Lee University is also located in the city of Lexington. The private liberal arts university was founded in 1749 as the Augusta Academy by Scots-Irish Presbyterian pioneers. Today, the school is home to three academic units and 24 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. It is the second oldest institution of higher education in the Commonwealth of Virginia and among one of the oldest in the American South.
