The work abuse attorneys of Lexington are happy to bring you content about our city. This article talks about Lexington's history and what visitors can do in the area.

About Lexington

Lexington is an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The county seat of Rockbridge County, it has a population of 7,042 as of the 2010 census. The city of Lexington was settled in 1778. It is the first of many American places to be named after Lexington, Massachusetts. During the American Civil War, David Hunter, a Union General, led a raid on Virginia Military Institute in Lexington. Two of the best known Confederate generals, Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, are buried within the city.

Things To Do

The city of Lexington has many interesting sites visitors can check out when they're in and around the area. Some of the points of interest include the Robert E. Lee gravesite in Lee Chapel on the Washington and Lee University campus, his horse's gravesite just outside of the chapel, and Thomas Jackson's gravesite at Oak Grove Cemetery. For individuals who don't find pleasure in viewing where the dead are buried, they can check out Stonewall Jackson House – the only residential of Confederate general Thomas Jackson when he was alive. Another interesting sire is the Goerge C. Marshall Foundation. Located on the Post of the Virginia Military Institute, it was commissioned by former President Harry S. Truman to preserve the papers of General George C. Marshall.

Want to do something more outdoorsy? The Chessie Nature Trail is a six-mile trail following the roadbed of the old Chesapeake and Ohio Railway along the Maury River. Take a stroll or ride your bike through the fields, pastures and woods of the river and catch a glimpse of its historic canal and railroad structure.

Besides those mentioned above, more notable attractions are situated near the city of Lexington. This include:

  • Sam Houston's birthplace
  • Cyrus McCormick Farm and Museum
  • Natural Bridge
  • The first nonprofit drive-in theater in the nation, Hull's Drive In
  • Lee Hi Travel Plaza

There are also a number of sites that have been added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). These properties are Anderson Hollow Archaeological District, Chapel Hill, Church Hill, Cedar Hill and Cemeteries, Hamilton Schoolhouse, Liberty Hall Site, John Moore House, Mountain View Farm, Tankersley Tavern, Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church, and many more.

Virginia Military Institute

Virginia Military Institute (VMI) was established in 1839 as a public senior military college. As America's first state military college, it is also the oldest public senior military college in the U.S. VMI can be found on Letcher Ave. in Lexington. Unlike other senior military colleges, it only enrolls cadets and only awards bachelor's degrees. Abraham Lincoln has coined the school "The West Point of the South."

Washington and Lee University

Washington and Lee University is also located in the city of Lexington. The private liberal arts university was founded in 1749 as the Augusta Academy by Scots-Irish Presbyterian pioneers. Today, the school is home to three academic units and 24 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. It is the second oldest institution of higher education in the Commonwealth of Virginia and among one of the oldest in the American South.
