Short History of Pottstown

Pottstown is a borough of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It sits on land that was originally deeded to William Penn. In 1714, the first iron forge was constructed in the area. Soon, blast furnaces were established for the production of iron and steel. These greatly interested the Potts family, who were ironmasters by trade. John Potts moved his family just west of Manatawny Creek and built a large home and forge on the 995 acres of land he owned. In 1761, he proceeded to establish a town called Pottsgrove on a part of the land. In 1815, it was incorporated as Pottstown and became the second borough of Pennsylvania.

In the mid-1800s, Pottstown's economy grew as the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad helped facilitate the movement of raw materials and finished goods in and out of the area. The borough's metal production also flourished, with its steel being used in the Golden Gate Bridge and Panama Canal. In 1944, Pottstown adopted a city manager form of government. Today, it has a mayor and seven borough council members. As of the 2019 census, the borough has an estimated population of 22,600. Its total area is 4.9 square miles. Pottstown borough is the center of a productive dairying and farming region.
