Thousands of other student athletes have raised their voices to call for change. Hundreds of young women have filed suit over sexual assault in recent years. Prominent universities, even the United States Olympic Committee and its national governing bodies, are all facing hundreds of these sexual assault lawsuits.
In their complaints, these courageous women allege that sexual abuse and exploitation are systemic throughout Olympic-level athletics in this country. In large part, they blame the United States Olympic Committee, an organization that they say has profited for decades off the exploitation of vulnerable young female athletes.
Deriving evidence from numerous sources, the plaintiffs claim that high-level officials at USOC have utterly failed to protect young athletes. Sexual abuse complaints are ignored or concealed, they say. Internal investigations were botched, they claim, allowing abuse to continue. And abusive coaches are allowed to gain access to thousands of young women who trust and rely on their judgment.
To the hundreds, if not thousands, of young women who have been victimized, we send our sincerest prayers and condolences. There is no excuse for sexual abuse. You deserved better. As high-level executives at USA Gymnastics have said, you were failed by the very people who were meant to protect you.
But you can fight back, too. Sexual abuse does not need to define who you are. Look to the hundreds of brave women who have already come forward as an example. Through the courageous work of these young women, survivors across the country know that when we all stand up, our voices can be heard loud and clear.
Look to the Larry Nassar scandal, which has brought USA Gymnastics to its knees. Nassar, now a convicted sexual molester, abused hundreds of girls during his time at Michigan State University. As a USOC-affiliated doctor, Nassar abused his position of authority and power to victimize countless young people.
It was only through the concerted efforts and hard work of sexual abuse survivors that Nassar is now a convicted felon. It is only through the work of these brave women that the board of USA Gymnastics was forced to step down, promising change at the organization for the future.
Survivors change the world. Our law firm is devoted to supporting and helping survivors just like you in the fight for justice. Like so many survivors, we believe that sexual abuse may be widespread throughout Olympic-level athletics, including at the University of Wisconsin.
