A new class action lawsuit has shocked Buckeyes across the country. In her legal complaint, filed in federal court, a student-athlete accuses Ohio State of failing to protect her from the sexual abuse allegedly committed by her coach.
Sexual Abuse Scandal Hits Ohio State University
A former member of Ohio State's Diving Club, the Olympic-level diver claims she was sexually exploited for years by her coach, William Bohonyi, a years-long affiliate of USA Diving and the United States Olympic Committee.
She says both Ohio State and USA Diving had numerous opportunities to save her from abuse, but failed to do so, opting to protect their chance at gold medals and lucrative sponsorship deals rather than protect young athletes.
Negligence, Exploitation Allegations Against USOC
But her allegations go far beyond USA Diving at Ohio State. In fact, she claims that sexual abuse and exploitation are commonplace and widespread throughout Olympic-level competition.
Recent scandals in USA Gymnastics, USA Swimming and USA Taekwondo have shown that the young woman's allegations, while horrific, are probably not as far from the truth as we would like.
At least in the case of USA Gymnastics, it appears that one of the USOC's national governing bodies put medals and money ahead of athlete safety, allowing hundreds of young women to be molested by team doctor Larry Nassar. Now, new evidence has emerged to suggest that Olympic sports may have a crisis of sexual abuse lying just below the surface.
