Recent reports have confirmed what many student-athletes already know: sexual abuse and exploitation are rampant in Olympic-level athletics. Scandals in USA Gymnastics, USA Taekondwo, USA Swimming and USA Diving have shocked the country, but sexual abuse has been prevalent at this level of international competition for decades.
Team USA Abuse Scandals Shock Nation
In hundreds of recent lawsuits, former Olympic-level athletes from across the nation accuse the United States Olympic Committee and its 47 national governing bodies of turning a blind eye to dangerous sexual predators. But the scandal has now spilled over to affect colleges and universities affiliated with the USOC.
Michigan State University, the University of Southern California, and now, Ohio State University have all come under fire.
2 Cases Against Ohio State Highlight Sexual Abuse Crisis
In two new class actions, former student-athletes who trained at Ohio State accuse the University of failing to protect them from sexual abuse.
In the first of these cases, a former USA Diving-trained diver says she was subjected to years of sexual exploitation by William Bohonyi, a coach at Ohio State's Diving Club. She says the school became aware of Bohonyi's conduct, but ignored complaints for months, allowing him to continue to abuse her.
The second case comes from the world of wrestling, where team doctor Richard Strauss may have molested hundreds of young male athletes over the course of decades. Reports suggest that Strauss was allowed to remain employed at Ohio State, despite multiple allegations against him being reported to high-level Ohio State officials.
