Summary of Port Royal

Port Royal is an unincorporated town in the county of Caroline, Virginia. It was established in 1652 as a port for the export of tobacco at the head of the Rappahannock River. One of the oldest towns in the area, it is said that the area was named after the Roy family – John and Dorothy Roy – who owned a ferry service across the river to King George County, a warehouse chartered by the crown, and a tavern. In 1744, Port Royal became an incorporated town. On April 26, 1865, John Wilkes Booth, former president Abraham Lincoln's assassinator, was killed two miles outside of the town at Garrett farmstead by Sgt. Boston Corbett. David Herold, his accomplish was also captured there.

As of the 2010 census, there is a population of 126 people living in the town. The total area of Port Royal is 0.10 square miles, according to the United States Census Bureau. It is within proximity to the communities of Samuel Corner, Monroe Corner, Etta, Camden, Portobafo and Port Conway. The Port Royal Crossroads – the intersection of Tidewater Trail (U.S. Route 17) and A P Hill Boulevard (U.S. Route 301) – is just southwest of the town.

Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge

The Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge is owned and operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Established in 1996, it conserves and protects fish and wildlife resources in the area. In 2007, the National Audubon Society designated some parts of the refuge as an Important Bird Area (IBA). Wildlife and habitats that can be spotted in the wildlife refuge are:

  • American Black Duck
  • Forest Habitat
  • Grassland Habitat
  • Wetland Habitat

Visitors to the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge can enjoy recreational opportunities such as hunting for turkey, squirrel, rabbit, deer and coyote, fishing, wildlife viewing, interpretations, environmental education and photography.

Port Royal Museum of American History

The Port Royal Museum of American History can be found on Main Street. Housed in the old Union First Market Bank, it is adjacent to the Historic Port Royal Schoolhouse. It features collections of cultural topics and historical artifacts of several U.S. wars, Tole Ware, White House China, John Wilkes Booth, Native American, genealogy research, books, toys, farming and business enterprises, and many more. The hours of operations are Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free; however, donations are greatly appreciated.
