South Hill is a town located at the geographical coordinates of 36.72679 degrees north latitude and 78.130597 degrees west longitude. Part of Mecklenburg County, Virginia, it has a total area of 9.31 square miles. 9.27 square miles of which is land, and 0.04 square miles is water. The main roads serving the area are U.S. Route 1, U.S. Route 58 ( S. Hill Bypass), Interstate 85, and E. Atlantic St. The town features a full-service hospital, a tobacco market and a number of hotels. It is governed by a council-manager government where the council has legislative and executive authority. South Hill and its neighboring town, La Crosse, have a close relationship.

The median age of a person living in it was 40 years old. About 18.8% of the South Hill population lived below the poverty line. As of the 2010 census, the town has a population of 4,650 people.
The Colonial Theatre is often also known as The Colonial Center for Performing Arts. Situated on S. Mecklenburg Ave., it was built in 1925 in South Hill. Between 1970 and 2001, the historic movie theater was closed in an effort to restore the building. On March 19, 2003, the theater was designated on the Virginia Landmarks Register. Two months later, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Today, the three-story brick building is used to host community theater productions and local events. It houses two lobbies, a welcome center, an art gallery, offices, and a ballroom.

To bring a sense of community to the town, South Hill hosts several events throughout the year. Whether you are a resident of the town or a visitor, these festivals and events can be enjoyed to your heart's content. Spooktoberfest is a weekend full of family-friendly Halloween fun. Hometown Christmas is a four-day holiday festival that features shopping, carousel rides, ice skating, music events, visits to Santa, and many more. Children are also given "Santa Bucks" to do some special shopping during the event. Besides holiday events, South Hill also hosts their Cruise-In and Car Show annually, Concerts in the Park monthly from spring to fall, Picnic in the Park, and Holiday Bazaar Arts & Craft Show.
If the events in the town aren't your type of scene, neighboring towns like Clarksville also hold many exciting festivals. The Virginia Lake Festival offers live musical entertainment, hot air balloons, fireworks, food and shopping at local vendors. Another festival located close to South Hill is the Wine Festival of Clarksville.
