Evolution of Terre Haute

Terre Haute is a city in Indiana. One of the biggest cities in the Wabash Valley, it is known as the Queen City of the Wabash and is the county seat of Vigo County. Its name was given by French-Canadian fur trappers and explorers of the area in the 1700s. It's derived from the French phrase terre haute, which means highland. In 1811, Fort Harrison was constructed, making it the first known permanent European settlement. In 1816, the Terre Haute village was platted. When Vigo County was formed in 1818, it became the county seat. In 1832, it was incorporated as a town and later as a city in 1853.

Its economy was based on steel and iron mills, hominy plants, distilleries, breweries and bottle makers. The city also flourished as an educational, arts and entertainment hub. Grand opera houses were opened, and Terre Haute became a stop on the vaudeville circuit. In 1886, the Memorial Stadium was built, attracting trotters and drivers from around the country.

For the next several decades, the economy of Terre Haute experienced some ups and downs as Prohibition, the Great Depression and other external factors occurred in the country. During World War II, the city's economy was in an upswing as plants were developed and the coal, agriculture and railroad industries were revitalized. After the war, companies such as Columbia Records, Allis-Chalmers, Pfizer, and Anaconda Aluminum had moved their factories into the city.

Today, Terre Haute is home to some of the world's leading companies. Located in the city's industrial park, these companies are:

  • Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional's cold-roll steel processing facility
  • Advics automotive brake systems manufacturing facility
  • Staples Corporation's Midwest Distribution Center
  • CertainTeed's fiber cement board manufacturing plant
  • ThyssenKrupp Presta's automotive steering systems manufacturing facility

It has a total area of 35.272 square miles and a population of 60,785 people, according to the 2010 census. The city is known as "The Crossroads of America."
