The Neighborhood of Jacobsville

Jacobsville is a neighborhood in the north-central area of Evansville, Indiana. It is bounded by Diamond Avenue to the north, North Garvin Street to the east, Lloyd Expressway to the south and First Avenue to the west. The neighborhood has a population of 6,999 people and a population density of 4,628 people per square mile. In 2019, households made, on average, an income of $26,922. Jacobsville has been plagued by lead contamination from the former Evansville Plat Works for a long time. As of 2021, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has conducted many projects to clean up the neighborhood.

Garvin Park

Garvin Park is among one of the oldest parks in Evansville. Located on Heidelbach Avenue in Jacobsville, it was acquired in 1915. The 80-acre park is a favorite of residents in the area. Providing a number of recreational amenities, it is also the perfect place for public gatherings. The park features the following:

  • A large lake
  • A swimming pool
  • A playground
  • Tennis courts
  • Basketball courts
  • A 1.5-mile trail around the lake
  • Park benches

During the Christmas holidays, the park is the host of the local Easter Seals' Ritzy Fantasy of Lights. On August 29, 1980, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and included a Works Progress Administration-era bandstand and concrete and stone bridges.

Bosse Field

Situated adjacent to Garvin Park is the historic Bosse Field. Also opened in 1915, it is the first municipally owned sports stadium in the U.S. Today, it is owned by the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation and operated by the Evansville Otters. It is the third-oldest ballpark that has been continuously used for professional baseball. The sports stadium is the home field for the Evansville Otters, a professional minor league of the independent Frontier League. High school and American Legion games are also hosted here. In 1991, the historic ballpark was used for the filming of the 1992 comedy-drama, A League of Their Own, by Columbia Pictures.

Willard Library

Willard Library was designed by architect James W. Reid of Reid & Reid and built in 1877 by Willard Carpenter. It is a private donation library that was incorporated in 1881 to serve Evansville and to carry out the terms of Carpenter's private trust. The Gothic Revival architectural style library houses a collection of genealogical materials, local archives and standard publications. On September 28, 1972, it was added to the NRHP. Speculated to be haunted by the "Lady in Grey," the library features a popular webcam that allows visitors to capture images in multiple locations. A free annual ghost tour is also hosted every mid-October.
