Harrison Elementary School is a public elementary sch0ol in Westside. Located on Western Avenue, it is part of the South Bend Community School Corporation district. The school offer classes from grades Kindergarten through 5th and has a population of 649 students. The student-to-teacher ratio is 18 to 1. Based on state test scores, 8% of its students are at least proficient in reading and math. The elementary school has an overall Niche grade of a C minus and a GreatSchools rating of 1 out of 10.
To the right of Harrison Elementary School, just outside of the Westside neighborhood boundaries, is Pulaski Park. It is a recreational park for residents and visitors who are in need of a gateway to go out, walk and have fun. Last year (2020), through funding provided by the My South Bend Parks and Trails Project, renovations for the park were underway. The $1 million project resulted in new soccer fields, splash pads, accessible paths, an accessible playground, and a paved parking lot. The park also received an award from the American Society of Landscape Architects' Indiana chapter.
Jeannie's Tavern is a gay bar in Westside. It is a popular hangout spot for local residents and can be found on South Bendix Drive. Although the bar is not quite spacious, the owner and staff make up for it with their great hospitality. The bar offers reasonably priced drinks, bar food, live music, karaoke, and an outdoor patio for customers to enjoy the fresh air. It is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. On Sundays, it is open from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m.
