Get To Know Mansfield

Mansfield is a borough in the east-central portion of Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Situated at the junction of U.S. Route 6 and U.S. Business Route 15, its history dates back to 1800 when English settler Asa Mann cleared a large part of the forest in the area and established the Mann's field estate. In 1804, he proceeded to lay out the plan for a town in the area. In 1857, the Borough of Mansfield was incorporated.

That same year, the Mansfield University of Pennsylvania was founded as the Mansfield Classical Seminary. The Wyoming Seminary vs. Mansfield State Normal football game, which was played on September 28, 1892, was the first football game to be played at night with the help of the Edison Illuminating Company. This historical event of the 1890s is celebrated in a festival each year. As of 2010, Mansfield has a population of 3,625 people and a total area of 1.9 square miles.

Mansfield Armory

Mansfield Armory is a 94-by-104-foot utilitarian brick building built between 1938 and 1939. Designed by architect Thomas H. Atherton, it was established for the 108th Ambulance Company, 103rd Medical Regiment of the Pennsylvania National Guard. Located in Smythe Park in Mansfield, the historic National Guard armory was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1991.

Mansfield University of Pennsylvania

Mansfield University of Pennsylvania was developed in 1857 as Mansfield Classical Seminary. In December of 1862, it became Mansfield Normal School after the application submitted by Simon B. Elliott was accepted. It was the third state normal school in PA. Other names that the small public university held before becoming Mansfield University of Pennsylvania were Mansfield State Teachers College and Mansfield State College. Today, the university is part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. It has a total enrollment of 1,649 students.
