Brief History of Maricopa

Maricopa is a city within in the Gila River Valley of Pinal County, Arizona. As the largest incorporated municipality in the county, the city has its beginnings as an oasis around a series of watering holes. It was known as Maricopa Wells and situated eight miles north of current-day Maricopa. In the late 1800s, it was one of the most important relay stations along the San Antonio-San Diego Mail Line and the Butterfield Overland Mail Route. The area played a major part in the development of the Southwest as it was one of the best-known spots in Arizona with a reliable source of water and abundant supply of food.

Maricopaville was developed west and south of Maricopa Wells. With the Southern Pacific Railroad in the process of building rail lines from the area to Phoenix, Maricopaville was like a gold rush California boomtown. However, the rail line was never built in the area; so, the Maricopaville settlement was rebuilt three miles east of present-day Maricopa to accommodate the Maricopa & Phoenix line.

On October 15, 2003, Maricopa was incorporated as a city. As of the 2020 census, Maricopa has a population of 58,125 people. This makes it the second-most populous place and the most populous incorporated place in Pinal County.
