Brief History of Fort Mohave

Fort Mohave is a census-designated place (CDP) in Mohave County, Arizona. Named after a fort that was used nearby during the Mohave War, it is a micro-suburb of Bullhead City. In 1540, Melchor Diaz documented his visit to the area in his travels through Northwestern Mohave County. This was where he met a group of natives called the Pipa Aha Macav, which means "People by the River." From "Ava Macav," the name Mojave, or Mohave, came to be.

During the Mohave War, the Camp Mohave fort was founded as a base for U.S. Army military operations against the native Mohave people. In the early part of the American Civil War, the fort was left abandoned. However, it was garrisoned again in 1866 by the U.S. Army troops. They remained there until the War Department turned the fort over to the Indian Service on September 29, 1890, by order of President Benjamin Harrison. In 1935, the Indian Service gave it to the Fort Mojave Indian Reservation.

As of the 2010 census, Fort Mohave has a population of 14,364 people. It is the most populous unincorporated community in Mohave County.
