Brief History of Dormont

Dormont is a borough within the Allegheny County of Pennsylvania. Also part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area, its name comes from the French word "mont d'or" which means "Mountain of Gold." The area that is now Dormont was inhabited by the Delaware and Shawnee tribes until 1768, when it was purchased as part of Fort Stanwix from the Six Nations. After it was acquired, it was part of Cumberland County, the Pitt Township in Bedford County, and the Penn Township in Washington County. In 1788, Dormont officially became part of the St. Clair Township in Allegheny County. On March 31, 1909, it was incorporated as the first independent municipality in the South Hills of the county.

As streetcars were introduced to the area and streetcar tunnels, as well as the Liberty Tunnels, were constructed, the borough began to grow rapidly. Today, it has a population of 8,373 people and offers a dense suburban feel. 58% of the residents in Dormont own their own homes.
