History of Bellevue

Bellevue is a borough in the Allegheny County of Pennsylvania. Once part of the Depreciation Lands that were reserved for Revolutionary War veterans, it is situated along the Ohio River. In 1792 and 1799, Hugh Henry Brackenridge and James Robinson purchased parcels of land, respectively, in the area and became its first landowners. On September 7, 1867, Bellevue was incorporated as a borough independent of Ross Township. The name of the borough, which means "beautiful view," was chosen by J. J. East, a linguist and early resident of Bellevue. Until 2015, the sale of alcohol in stores and restaurants in Bellevue was restricted by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB). This "dry" status was in place because the borough had opted to remain so after the end of Prohibition.

As of the 2010 census, Bellevue has a population of 8,370 people and a total area of 1.1 square miles. It is bordered by Ross Township on the north and east, Brighton Heights on the southeast, and Avalon on the northwest. The borough is home to over 730 locally historic buildings.

Northgate Junior and Senior High School

Northgate Junior and Senior High School is a public high school in Bellevue. Part of the Northgate School District, it services 7th through 12th grade students in the community. The school has a total enrollment of 446 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of 12 to 1. Based on state standardized test scores, 35% of its students are proficient in math and 56% are in reading. The high school has a GreatSchools rating of 4 out of 10 and an overall Niche grade of a B minus.

Parks

Bellevue Borough Parks Department owns and operates three parks within the community. These parks include:

  • Memorial Park and Swimming Pool
  • Bayne Park
  • Gillott Field

Memorial Park is the biggest out of the three parks. Located on Bellevue Avenue, residents and visitors to the borough enjoy coming to this park for its many amenities. Some of which are ballfields, basketball courts, tennis courts, a volleyball court, a fitness trail, a playground and an off-leash dog park. The park also features a swimming pool complex with lap lanes, a pool slide, a baby pool, diving boards, and handicapped ramps. The pool, Bragdon Shelter, and Lone Sentinel Shelter are available for rental and private parties.

Bayne Park is another park in Bellevue on North Balph Avenue. It is popular among skaters in the area. The park offers a skate plaza, playground, toddler play area and open green space.

Lastly, Gillott Field is a playground on Davis Avenue. Its only recreational amenities are a ballfield and playground equipment.
