Were you or a loved one sexually abused by Craig A. Burden, a former music leader at Calgary Baptist Church in West Lafayette, Indiana? In 2016, Burden was convicted on charges of attempted child exploitation and possession of child pornography. While none of the misconduct for which Burden was convicted took place at the Southern Baptist church, our experienced sexual abuse attorneys in Indiana believe there is a possibility that he molested children in the congregation. Burden was fired from his role as a music leader at Calgary Baptist Church after his arrest in July of 2015. He was arraigned on charges including vicarious sexual gratification involving a victim younger than 14.

There were signs, however, that the church stood by Burden even during his prosecution. In a sermon held after Burden’s firing, Pastor Daniel Berry implored congregants not to judge the former music leader.

In 2016, Burden was convicted of attempted child exploitation and possession of child pornography. He was released from prison in June 2018, but remains a registered sex offender in the State of Indiana.

Sexual Abuse In The Southern Baptist Church

Over the last five years, many prominent members of the Southern Baptist Convention have been hit by sexual abuse allegations. Sexual abuse survivors and advocates now openly criticize the Convention for failing to draft and manage strong sexual abuse policies for local churches. Abuse survivors say that their claims were ignored or concealed.

To date, the Southern Baptist Convention has provided no centralized guidance as to how local churches should handle sexual abuse claims. Survivors say this failure of leadership has led to a sexual abuse epidemic within the church.

Our dedicated legal team has watched with shock as survivors have stepped forward to report sexual abuse claims against Southern Baptist church leaders and volunteers. In a scandal echoing the ongoing crisis in the Catholic Church, survivors say that SBC leaders have concealed sexual abuse allegations, silenced victims and failed to protect children.
