North Mountain & Shaw Butte

North Mountain & Shaw Butte are recognizable landmarks in the north valley skyline of Arizona. Located in North Mountain Village, it offers a variety of trails for hikers of all abilities. This includes:

  • Maricopa Trailhead
  • Shaw Butte Trailhead
  • Mountain View II Park
  • North Mountain Park

The park is also home to two of the best summit climbs in the City of Phoenix.

For those who aren't a fan of hiking or any active recreation, you can visit the North Mountain Visitor Center. There, visitors can learn more about the Sonoran wildlife, trail system, and the regional history of how the area used to serve as a campground for Phoenix Indian School's pupils and their families. The park is open every day from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Trails are available from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Lookout Mountain Preserve

Lookout Mountain Preserve is located in the northeastern part of North Mountain Village. Smaller than those of the North Mountain Park, the two mountains of the preserve are perfect hiking sports for visitors. Because it isn't as popular as the other summits, there is less of a crowd. Once you hike to the peak, it also offers a fantastic view of the land below. The trailheads of Lookout Mountain Preserve are the Lookout Mountain Park, Lookout Mountain Trailhead, Shadow Mountain - Acoma Dr. Access, and Shadow Mountain - 28th St. Access. Lookout Mountain Park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The trailhead is open from sunrise to sunset.
