During the summer, the city is a tourist spot for residents of Chicago and nearby cities. Its history dates back to a land purchase in 1830 by real estate speculator Isaac C. Elston. In 1836, the city was incorporated and was home to a newspaper, church, post office, a commercial district, ten hotels and 1,500 residents. As of the 2010 census, Michigan City has a population of 31,479 people and a total area of 22.855 square miles.
The Old Michigan City Light is a lighthouse built in 1858. Although it has been decommissioned, the lighthouse is still standing on the harbor of Michigan City in Washington Park. It is managed by the Michigan City Historical Society, Inc. and is open to the public every Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. as a museum. On November 5, 1974, the lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
A treasure in Northwest Indiana, Washington Park Zoo is a 15-acre zoo on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. It opened as a sanctuary in 1928 and is home to a variety of wildlife that are in need. As a zoo today, it features more than 90 different species of animals native to North America, South America, Africa, Australia and Asia. Its hours of operations are Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, it is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission fees are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $6 for children, and free for those under two years of age. Discounts can be applied to residents of Michigan City.
